A portfolio manager is an individual who develops and implements investment strategies for individuals or institutional investors. Under the purview of financial services industry careers, portfolio management positions are available with hedge funds, pension plans and private investment firms.

Main Duties
Commonly, the main duties of this role include:
-Build and maintain portfolios by establishing investment strategies.
-Understand and inform on market characteristics and dynamics.
-Relationship management.
-Evaluate performance against strategy and regulatory requirements.
Key Activities:
-Read relevant news and trade publications on an ongoing basis to maintain current understanding of financial markets and local and world events which may impact portfolios.
-Meet regularly with analysts and researchers to discuss market developments and trends.
-Network with industry experts to maintain current understanding of market trends and industry activities.
-Conduct research on investment products, companies and other market factors and write reports to inform others (e.g. investors, directors, executives) on investment/company/market activities.
-Maintain regular contact and ongoing dialogue with clients in order to:
1)Understand and remain current on changes in clients’ situations/needs (e.g. short- and long- term financial objectives, risk tolerance).
2)Inform clients of changes in their portfolio and/or market trends that may affect clients’ financial objectives.
3)Develop business through contacts and referrals.
4)Make sales and marketing presentations to current and prospective clients on behalf of the organization in order to attract new investors, maintain and service existing clients.
5)Actively network with industry experts and other financial professionals (internal and external centers of influence) in order to increase personal and company profile.
